Stay Awesome

mountain peak during daytime

Scenario 2

Simon and Hellen are off to Mexico!
They need your advice.....

Simon

DOB 01/12/1957

Age 67. Loves the great outdoors. Runs the equivalent of a marathon every week. Fit and well. Big science fan. Planning to explore nature reserves while away and fancies trekking up a mountain while there. Will do a daily run. Not one for sun loungers. Always first at the buffet.

Hellen

DOB 26/05/1960

Age 65. Can't wait to relax for a fortnight, has lined up the books. Enjoys a cocktail by the pool. Will miss the dog while away and does enjoy making friends with animals wherever she goes. Been known to befriend a hotel cat or two on previous trips.

Find out more about their trip and medical history in this video.

Then have a go at the activities below.

Simon's Risk Assessment

Get some practice with the UK routine schedule and the incomplete immunisation algorithm and check if Simon (DOB 01/12/1957) is up to date. He's had:

  • 5 x TDP, first 3 were 1 month apart. He had a fourth dose in 1998 - last had a dose in 2008

  • 2x MMR 1 month apart in 1998

  • He turned 65 before 1st September 2023

  • booked in for flu vaccine next week

  • No evidence of shingles or pneumococcal vaccines on the records.

Using the NaTHNaC website, which travel vaccines will you advise him to get or consider? Of these, which ones can you personally give and which ones will you refer to another health care professional?

He's had a yellow fever vaccination in 1998, 1 dose of typhoid at the same time and a first dose of hepatitis A (Havrix). Never had rabies vaccines. Had a course of hepatitis B for working in the police.

What other advice will he benefit from? Will he need antimalarials? Are there any factsheets on there that you can give to him? HINT: this might be one of them. Can you find any others?

Hellen's Risk Assessment

Get some more practice with the UK routine schedule and the incomplete immunisation algorithm and see if Hellen is up to date with her UK immunisations.

She's just turned 65 in May this year. She is booked in for her flu vaccine next week. She's had a full course of TDP as a child and her 5th dose was given in 2008. No evidence of shingles or pneumococcal vaccines on the records.

Using the NaTHNaC website, which travel vaccines will you advise her to get or consider? Of these, which ones can you personally give and which ones will you refer to another health care professional?

Like Simon, she had Yellow fever, hepatitis A and Typhoid for Gambia in 1998. Never had rabies vaccines.

What other advice will she benefit from? Will she need antimalarials? Are there any factsheets on there that you can give to her? To start you off: this might be one of them.

A pretty poor consultation.

Yes, it can be done in 2 minutes

- but badly.

How many mistakes, omissions and improvements can you suggest?
